The Granby General Hospital medication delivery system in their long-term care unit
Source: La Voix de l’Est (January 24, 2001)
The long-term care clinical team, who is composed of nurses, nursing assistants, and orderlies, is always preoccupied with offering quality health care, and has thus recently, in collaboration with the help of its pharmacists, opted for a new medication delivery system.
The goal was to ensure increased security to its residents by reducing the risk of errors during the preparation, administration and registration of medication in the drug register, the legal document part of the medical record.
Before the implementation of this new system, nursing assistants had to prepare the prescribed medication themselves in small containers with the help of index cards provided by the pharmacy. They then had to crush certain medication for several clients, verify them with the drug register, distribute these medications to patients, and afterwards, return to the register and sign for what they had distributed.
|
As you can see, this process was very time consuming. The Manrex system lets staff have a better control of the medication and reduce its required preparation time, since it is delivered ready to distribute from the pharmacy. Furthermore, this system facilitates the distribution of medication, which permits staff to dedicate more time to the resident’s other needs.
This new system boasts numerous advantages, like the following: the elimination of index cards, less handling, recuperation of doses following an interruption of treatment, as well as a better control of medication intake in each unit, since all medication is sealed in personalized containers.
To accomplish this, with absolute support from the pharmacy staff at the Granby General Hospital, a few guidelines have been established:
| | 1. The number and order of residents that are to receive medication is predetermined.
2. The pharmacy serves 35 days of medication at a time, with a few exceptions.
3. The hours of administration are standardized.
4. All administered medication must be prescribed by a physician, with the exception of certain authorized medication in the hospital centre, also known as permanent prescriptions (Atasol 325 ml, suppositories, etc.).
5. The staff must ensure that all medication is taken in their presence.
6. Registration in the drug register is done simultaneously.
7. All medication refusals are noted in the register.
8. Any modification of administration hours must be authorized by the pharmacy. As you can see, all was well thought out to facilitate the jobs of the clinical team, to ensure that the administration is safer and more efficient, all while offering quality service and comfort to our seniors. |
Painful Pill Crushing

Dear Elaine,
I want to thank you and John for the kind wishes and congratulations on my retirement from pharmacy. lt's been almost 39 years since I first came to Kelowna to work for Dyck's Pharmacists. It's been quite a wonderful 39 years, too!
I have to thank John Webster and Manrex for helping our pharmacy get into the long term care medication business. Although we did a bit of this work before 1974, it was in that year that my wife and I flew to Winnipeg to see this new Controlled Dosage System. Right away we could see the merits of this system and adopted it in our pharmacy that same month. It was because of the innovation of Manrex with systems like this that allowed our pharmacy to get into long term care in a larger and serious way. It helped give us the major share of the long term care beds in our area.
Over the years, there have been many other systems that have come and gone. but our pharmacy has always been loyal to Manrex. The customer service has always been great and the Manrex mandate has always been to support the pharmacist in being knowledgeable and professional in the service of nursing homes. The videos and professionally-written newsletters are other facets too of great service. Manrex's professional approach served us well throughout the decades.
So on behalf of all the past and present staff of Dyck's (now Medicine Centre). I'd like to express my sincere thanks for all your efforts and support throughout the years. I wish Manrex much success in the future in working with phamacists in Canada and around the world.
Best Regards,
Dennis Gerace

We are a 229 bed skilled nursing facility located in southeastern Wisconsin. My nurses are very impressed with your product. We were searching for a portable device that would be easy to use, yet powerful enough to crush multiple medications. From the minute the product was put into use, the nurses noted less soreness and discomfort that comes from using a manual crushing method. This product is also a time saver during busy med pass times. Thank you for coming up with such a useful tool!

The staff have been thrilled with the ease of use, time saving, and no complaints of injury from repetitive movements from other means of crushing medications. We can recommend this automated tablet crusher to other long term care facilities.

PowderCrush™ Testimonial
Your machine was recommended by our liaison officer at an annual inspection that we had in our Nursing Home. She had noticed that the RN's were doing a lot of pounding and noise with our medication crushing. We had seen the Pill Crusher in one of our magazine we receive monthly. We were very pleased with the fact that we could try it for a month at no cost, that way it gave us a chance to work with it and see the difference that it made with everybody's shoulders and the noise pollution. We knew after 2 weeks that it was a keeper. We liked it so much that we didn't hesitate to buy a second one.
The service is SUPER if we have any question/problems with parts, we know that somebody will listen to our concern or send us another part in a fast way even though we are quite a few miles away.
Again a big Thank You for all you do.

As Care Manager it is part of my role to find products that help staff do their job safely and efficiently. We have tried many medication crushers in the past and most have come up short in one way or another. The staff at Glacier View Lodge, (a Complex Care Facility for Seniors) are most impressed and pleased with the Powdercrush™. It is simple to use and reasonably quiet. We have found it even crushes the meds that have been very difficult to crush manually, such as calcium tablets, with the simple press of a button.
Sincerely,

To whom it may concern.
We have recently - about 5 mos. - converted to Heat Seal compliance packaging. My accolades to the company for introducing this. We have now eliminated completely the breakdown of packaging - are converting to Tri Fold to eliminate stapling - and all of which is at a cost saving. Really - This is a No Brainer!
Yours Truly
